Come Dine with Mr Shakespeare
by Julia Bolden, presented by Roo Theatre Company
Cast
Kit Nicols as Lady Macbeth, Francesca Elise as Cordelia, James Bruce as Duke Orsino ,
Ben Scheck as Petruchio , Kevin Ryan as Bill Shakespeare
Reality TV lurches onto the stage with four familiar Shakespearean characters competing for 1,000 gold crowns in an extreme version of a popular cookery show.
Cambridge writer Julia Bolden was inspired to create this Bard-meets-popular-culture extravaganza after appearing as a Come Dine with Me contestant in a Cambridge episode (first televised - January 2016).
In this version, fan of excess music, Duke Orsino (Twelfth Night), Cordelia (King Lear’s snubbed former favourite daughter), lecherous Petruchio (renowned tamer of small wild animals) and the nefarious Lady Macbeth, each host a dinner party for the other three.
The kitchen capers of this volatile collection of unhinged individuals result in an inevitable mix of triumphs and disasters, for which they award each other scores. Elements of their native plays are interwoven to comic and tragic effect. But who will ultimately be declared the winner and how will they celebrate their victory?
