Cambridge Jazz Festival 2016 - Sons of Kemet at Cambridge Junction
MOBO award-winners Sons of Kemet - kinetic, earth-shaking and with an electrifying live performance, the band features four of the UK jazz scene’s brightest stars, culminating in a revolutionary mix of music that spans jazz, rock, dub and Caribbean folk. The band has since been nominated a UMA Award and also at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards. Tribal jazz with a punk attitude.
Led by saxophonist, clarinettist, composer and ‘BBC New Generation Artist’ Shabaka Hutchings, Sons of Kemet features Theon Cross on tuba and both Seb Rochford (Polar Bear, Babyshambles) and Tom Skinner (Melt Yourself Down, Mulatu Astatke) on drums.
Hypnotic double drum rhythms frame the colourful interplay of saxophone, clarinet and tuba as the original compositions are brought to life by four fiercely creative musicians. Sessions on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz On 3 and at Maida Vale Studios for BBC Radio 2, a collaboration with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the London Jazz Festival and appearances at Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Latitude Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, The Barbican and Ronnie Scott’s have catapulted the band into the limelight.
Their debut album ‘Burn’ (Naim Records) was one of the truly standout releases of 2013 and picked them up a major deal to provide the soundtrack for GAP’s national TV advertising campaign directed by David Fincher.
